The iliotibial band is a band of tissue in the leg. It works alongside your thigh muscles to help stabilize the knee. When this band becomes inflamed, this is known as iliotibial band syndrome, also known as ITBS.
Iliotibial band syndrome is common in people who participate in activities that involve a lot of running. Running puts strain and pressure on the knee and on your iliotibial band. ITBS is also frequent in people with uncommon gaits or uneven leg lengths. Those with iliotibial band syndrome often suffer from knee pain, and may have trouble using the full range of motion of the knee. If you have pain and swelling on the outside of your knee we recommend consulting your doctor to determine the source of your knee pain.
If you think you may be suffering from ITBS, your doctor will provide you with the appropriate diagnosis and treatment. Typical treatment for iliotibial band syndrome begins by following the RICE method of rest, ice, compression and elevation.
