Holly B. is an active professional in her late twenties who spends her free time playing recreational flag football and league basketball. She recently tore her ACL and will be sharing her experiences with us as she works towards getting back into sports.

One of the scariest memories of my high school basketball career was when I almost hyperextended my knee. I can still remember the moment clearly - I was falling backwards while one of my teammates was standing on my foot, and it felt like my knee was moving in the wrong direction. Luckily, she moved at the last possible second and I was able to fall safely on the floor without actually hurting my knee.

Knee hyperextension can cause the ligaments in your knee to stretch beyond their normal range of motion, leading to pain and swelling. If I had actually hyperextended my knee, I probably would have been out for at least a month in the season. Sometimes knee hyperextension can even damage ligaments to the point of tearing. In those cases, surgery may be needed to repair the tear.

Though nothing happened to me, a hyperextended knee may be prevented if you wear a knee brace. After hurting my ACL and doing tons of research on the topic, I'm starting to realize the importance of protecting your joints - especially during sports. The DonJoy Playmaker knee brace would have been ideal for me, since it's perfect for basketball and protects the ligaments from tearing and hyperextension. You can also check out the DonJoy FullForce Ligament knee brace for top-of-the-line knee protection during other sports and activities.
