Why You Should Wear Knee Braces and Back Braces While Gardening

Did you know that even the simplest tasks can cause wear and tear on your joints? Even ordinary chores such as gardening can cause prolonged joint pain, especially in the knees and back.

Now that it’s Fall (with Winter just around the corner!), make sure you pay attention to how you’re treating your body when gardening. Issues in the joints can occur when raking leaves, stooping down to pick up weeds, digging, laying sod, or even when bending over to water a hard to reach plant.

In order to help reduce your chances of injury while working in the yard, we recommend braces for the back and knee while gardening. These gardening braces help support your joints during bending and twisting motions. This helps minimize joints from moving out of place and lowers your chances of injury. Gardening braces can be especially helpful if you’ve had a previous injury, since an injury may leave your back or knee more susceptible to re-injury.

Here are some braces that can be worn while gardening:

Braces for the Back While Gardening

DonJoy Back Brace – Provides compression all around the back for lower back support, and is adjustable for your needs. It’s also easy to use and the breathable material makes it ideal to wear while gardening.

DonJoy ComfortFORM Back Support – A great general purpose back brace and ideal for extra joint protection while gardening. It’s designed to help promote proper back alignment.

Braces for the Knee While Gardening

DonJoy Reaction Knee Brace – One of our bestselling knee braces. Webbed design helps disperse energy and pressure around the knee, for more balanced, controlled activity. It may be especially helpful for gardeners with previous knee injuries.

DonJoy Performer Knee Support – Great for mild support of the knee. Provides all around compression to minimize knee strain and reduces pressure on the knee cap.

Common Knee Injuries: Meniscus Tears

The knee joint is comprised of many structures, one of which is the C-shaped piece of cartilage known as the meniscus. The meniscus cushions the outer and inner edges of the knee and helps stabilize the knee joint.

Did you know that one of the most common injuries in the knee is a meniscus tear?

That’s because meniscus tears can occur in all types of people, whether they’re young, old, athletic, or not very active at all. Many meniscus tears are caused by the twisting and turning motions during sports. Others can be caused by something as simple as tripping while running uphill or by lifting something heavy. It’s important to note that the meniscus tends to wear down and weaken as we age. That can cause meniscus tears and knee pain as patients approach the later stages in life, even if they are not particularly active.

Since the meniscus is so susceptible to injury, it’s often recommended to wear a knee brace for meniscus tears. They can be helpful whether you play sports, have a previous meniscus injury, or if you’re getting up there in age and would like extra support before physical activity. Most people are not educated about the frequency of meniscus tears, so you’re already one step ahead of the pack!

Aircast Walking Brace Reviews

Thinking about getting a medical walking boot? Aircast is the leading brand in walking braces. Check out these reviews for the Aircast FP, Aircast SP, and Aircast XP walking boots:

I could move around without pain…

“After a severe ankle sprain I was given a splint at the hospital and purchased some crutches. The splint offered very little support and the crutches made it impossible to do anything. Fortunately the orthopedic doctor I saw for follow up the following week put me in this Aircast boot. What a difference! I could move around when I had to without pain because of the support it gives. The interior airbags allow you to adjust the support level as the swelling of the foot changes, or as needed for comfort. A bit more for walking and a bit less for when relaxing with your foot up. Unless you have someone who can wait on you hand and foot (no pun intended!) get one of these….I HIGHLY recommend the Aircast boot!” – Casey

You can’t put a price tag on comfort…

“I recently broke my foot and was provided a walking cast of sorts from the ER but was unhappy with the weight and feel of it. After much research, I found betterbraces.com and am I glad! I ordered the Aircast FP Walking Brace yesterday and received it this morning. What a huge difference! The comfort and feel is very good! Much better than the brace I was provided by the hospital. I also feel that the cost was very good. You can’t put a price tag on comfort.” – Rich

My foot immediately felt better…

“I have several hairline fractures in my foot that I happened just because of overuse. This boot is fantastic, it is a little heavy, but not compared to an actual cast. My foot immediately felt better, I could actually walk. And what is great is that you can adjust the air to you’re comfort level and what feels good to you, versus a cast that is just there. I highly recommend this boot!” – Hannah

A total life saver… better than being stuck in cast…

“I wore this after I fractured my foot and it was a total life saver. Really surprisingly comfortable. A lot better than being stuck in cast. I now wear an Aircast ankle brace that I really like too. Nice products!” – BethAnn

It sped up my healing time…

“I sprained my ankle and wore one of these for 2 weeks. It sped up my healing time and was extremely comfortable to wear. The compression made the swelling go down a lot faster.”
