The kneecap (patella) is the bone that protects the knee joint. It rides in a groove at the lower end of the thigh bone (femur) and is held in place by muscles and tendons. A blow or sudden twist can dislocate the kneecap, creating a painful injurycaused when it moves to the outer side of the leg.
