OFF-THE-SHELF BRACING

1. How many different sizes of off-the-shelf braces are there and how do you determine the size?
A. We offer seven different sizes of off-the-shelf braces. They range from extra small through triple extra large. Sizing is determined by taking a thigh circumference, six inches above mid-patella or knee cap, a calf circumference, six inches below mid-patella or knee cap, and right at the mid-patella or knee cap. Please refer to the sizing chart below to determine your size. If you fall into different sizes, we suggest that you go with the larger size.

BRACING: ACL, MCL, LCL, and Meniscus

1. Functional knee braces come in three variations: ACL, PCL and CI. What is the difference between the three and how do I determine which I should order?
A. The functional bracing line was designed to provide ligamentous control to the knee both pre-injury (prophylactically) and post-injury. The majority of product usage occurs post-injury.
The most common ligament injury is a tear of the anterior cruciate ligament or ACL. Because this injury creates specific indications in the joint, we apply the appropriate leverage forces to support the affected ligament. Therefore, when an ACL is torn, we recommend an ACL specific brace such as an Armor or Playmaker. The brace will supply the appropriate force loads to control any anterior tibial movement that the ACL itself would usually control.

2. What brace do you suggest for MCL and LCL injuries?
A. MCL and LCL injuries are common but less severe than ACL and PCL injuries because MCL and LCL injuries can heal without invasive surgical procedures. With medial and lateral support these ligaments can heal and normal function will usually return. Depending on the grade of injury (I, II or III), an Armor or Playmaker is recommended. These braces can also be worn to support the knee for Meniscus injuries.

3. I want to prevent a knee injury, what do you suggest?
A. Wearing a brace to prevent injury can save you time and money once you take into account recovery time and work/sport time lost from a major knee injury. DonJoys functional braces work great for preventing ligament knee injuries, including the ACL. The Armor brace is perfect for extreme sports and contact and non-contact sports. The Playmaker will provide moderate support for those who are active and for daily activities. Both of these braces can be used in water sport activities.

For mild instabilities or knee joint pain you can use a Deluxe Hinged Knee or Sports Hinged Knee. These are shorter, low profile braces that will give compression and medial/lateral (side to side) stability.

FLEXION AND EXTENSION

1. What flexion and extension stops are provided with your functional braces?
A. Our functional braces come installed with a ten-degree extension stop and ship with a 0, 20, 30 and 40-degree stop. The flexion stops are placed at 45, 60, 75 and 90 degrees. A separate full flexion/extension stop is offered to completely immobilize the brace. Our Armor and Playmaker come with a 10 degree extension stop already installed. We limit the range because the braces are designed to be worn after a patient has achieved greater range-of-motion, or ROM, control.

REPLACEMENT PARTS AND SOFTGOODS

1. If I need replacements for my DonJoy ACL brace, how do I know which brace I have and where can I find the size?

Armor 4titute/Armor/FourcePoint Full Replacement Kit Legend Replacement Kit

A. The best way to determine which brace you have is by looking at the picture and description on the BetterBraces website. In one corner of the thigh portion of your brace the size and side (right or left) is stamped on the liner on the side that attaches to the frame.

2. I don't have an ACL brace, but I have a PCL or CI brace. How do I know what type of brace I have?
A. An ACL brace has 5 straps, a PCL brace has 4 straps, and the CI has 6 straps. For replacements kits, visit http://www.betterbraces.com/ViewProducts/DonJoyDefianceCustomReplacementStrapsandPadsKit/1490.aspx.

3. I need replacements for my DonJoy OA (OsteoArthritis) brace, how do I know which brace I have and where can I find the size and affected compartment?

OAdjuster OA Everyday

A. First determine which brace you have by the picture and description on the BetterBraces website. For the OAdjuster brace the size and compartment is on sticker in a corner of the thigh portion. You will need to unvlecro the liner to locate the sticker on the frame. For the OA Everyday the sticker is located on the blue part of the thigh frame under the black plastic cuff. You will need to slightly pull away the black plastic cuff from the blue frame in order to find the sticker.

4. Can I order an individual strap or pad from my brace?
A. We only offer full replacement kits including all pads and straps with the exception of the OA Everyday and the Female Fource. These two braces have strap replacement kits and liner/strap kits separately.

ANKLE INJURY

1. Which brace is best for my Ankle Sprain?
A. Depending on the location and severity of the sprain, the best brace for a lateral ankle sprain (a sprain on the outside of your ankle) would be a RocketSoc or the Sports Ankle Brace. The RocketSoc is a soft brace with 2 heel lock straps and is great for mild to moderate sprains. The Sports Ankle Brace has 2 figure 8 straps to keep the ankle from over rotation. The Velocity is a hinged rigid brace great for moderate to severe sprains of the medial or lateral ankle. These braces are low profile and can be worn prophylactically to prevent ankle injuries.
