DonJoy Defiance III Custom Knee Brace reviews

1. WOW! The pain is gone as soon as I put them on. When we decided to go to the braces, my doctor told me that many people don’t wear them because of the bulk and visibility. “They aren’t very effective when they sit on the shelf.” I am not finding it difficult to wear them since the inconvenience PALES in comparison to the pain relief when wearing them.” 2. What took me so long to agree to these? If only I knew then what I know now. I want to shout from the rooftop to all those people struggling with the decision to make the financial investment and to commit to the inconvenience. Count me in as a true believer! My only suggestions for improvement: Alter the design such that the brace can be removed without removing shoes and pants. Can both the bottom and top be on the same side? I travel frequently, the braces set off the metal detectors at the airport. Can they be constructed of another material that won’t do that? - Cindy
At first this hurt the inflamed side of my knee that the extra pressure was on. But now in about a week I have no pain at all when I wear it. The DonJoy Defiance is so light that exercise is very easy and it doesn't through me off balance at all. My only complaint is where to find pants that can be worn over it with it sticking out. I finally bought a couple of skirts because this definitely doesn't work under jeans. - cellogirl
I need my knee replaced, but want to wait till summer because of the length of time off. This brace has made it possible for me to walk, and walk pain free allowing me to have the surgery when I can afford to take the time off. I didn't realize how much I was throwing my hip out until I walked with this brace on. End of story...I can walk again and I have no pain . - bf
tore my acl and have been wearing ever since. Provides great knee support and I have more confidence that my knee will not give out. Some discomfort from the straps and material touching the skin on the inside of the brace, but no other complaints. - Cj
I wear two of them and they help greatly, won't be caught without them - willie
I am a gymnast and I tore my ACL and both meniscus on my left leg. 2 weeks after surgery i got the brace and it has been amazing! the support i got from the brace was incredible! the straps are a bit uncomfortable, but if you get the under-sleeve for it, it makes it alot more enjoyable to wear. Its been 7 months since the surgery, i am back to tumbling with the brace and i never think twice about doing a skill when i have the brace on. I love it!! - LaLa
I have struggled with knee pain and weakness since I was run over by a potato combine about 40 years ago. It finally got to a point where I needed some help. I thought that I would need to have a knee replacement surgery but I was a little afraid because I have heard some good and some bad things about that type of surgery. I wear the brace every other day now and it is amazing how good my knee feels. I did not have the surgery, at least not yet, I will put it off as long as I can. However, using the brace I can run, walk, exercise and do just about anything I want to try to do. I have not felt that weakness in my knee since I started wearing the brace. If I find that my knee hurts for whatever reason I put on the brace and the pain is gone almost instantly. The day I got the brace my wife and I went for a 2 mile walk. It was so nice to be able to walk with my lovely wife in the open air and not have pain for several days afterward. The DonJoy brace has been such a blessing in my life. At first the pressure on inside of my knee was annoying but the pain relief far outweighed the annoyance. The inner sleeve is a great option, I used it all the time at first but I don’t need to use it now. This is an awesome product thank you so much for your help. - Bill
tore my acl and put a crack in my tibia around april/march, had reconstructive surgery that july. After sitting out a whole six to seven months I "graduated" from therapy and recieved a defiance brace thanks to insurance;) now im still able to snowboard and even skate with a puck without worrying. long story short, get this brace to keep your knee stable. - jamar
I had MCL/ACL knee surgery back in 2004. I had this brace made for me and I used for the first 6 months after coming out of physical therapy. It allowed me to get straight back onto my snowboard and back into tennis without even thinking too hard about it. As my leg strengthened I stopped using it, and it went into storage for 8 years. Now my tennis is up many levels and I've started running very hard on-court, even skidding on concrete to change directions. Several times I've felt my knee come close to popping out again, and so I put my 8 year old knee brace back into action. It worked flawlessly as I felt my knee start to give way on a change of direction, and the brace took the entire force of my change of movement - I just kept on charging :-). You really can use this knee brace to the best of your abilities. - Sid
I tore my meniscus last year during training and my doctor said that the best thing to wear was the Donjoy Defiance III. I was excited because I see a lot of colleges and pro teams wearing them and they are suppose to be the best. When I got it it was the best thing I ever got. I wouldnt have traded it for anything else and i can be sure to say that it has faved my ass numerous times. Overall a great investment and I would recommend this product to any high-contact athlete who is look for protection - Frank
I really am starting to love my DonJoy Defiance Braces. I've had them for about 1 month now. I can walk a lot better than I have. Most times I can wear them for up to 5 hours then I really have to start to take them off. Sometimes I can wear them a little longer, but not by much though. They get aggravated and a little sore. I have to wear them on both knees. I have Osteoarthritis in both knees and need surgery as well in both. I was told that there's a good chance that I'll be wearing them for the rest of my life. UGH!! Oh well, anything to help me to get around. Thank you again DonJoy for giving me my knees back some. I agree with you all that it would be nice if there was a way to get them off/on without taking shoes and pants off as well. It's kinda embarrassing having to go into a small stall at work and do this every time I work there. The one Job I can MOST of the time wear them, but the other I have to take them off (work 8 hrs.) part way through working. - TippyToes
Old Soldier
Back in 1999 I tore my ACL, PCL, MCL, and Meniscus if an Airborne operation. After the surgery was complete, I was fitted for an older model of this brace. I used it for 12 years before it finally failed broke. Quite honestly, I nearly paniced. Despite the road blocks put in my path by the VA I finally got a new brace, the Defiance III. WOW! This is what comfort should be. After almost a year without a brace, it sure feels good to be back in action. Excellent product. - Old Soldier
I tore my left ACL and was given this brace to play basketball in post surgery. At first the brace rubbed and left skin irritated but was easily broken into. I don't even notice that I'm wearing a brace, it is that confortable. The only downside to this brace is it squeaks loudly like it needs oiled. Also, the plastic that holds the straps came loose and it pops in and out when I run. Other than those downsides, it's a great brace. - Em

The DonJoy Defiance Knee Brace is meant to support and protect the knee, but primarily and specifically the ACL. Athletes will rely and depend on a brace such as the DonJoy Defiance Knee Brace after suffering from a large injury that generally resulted in a reconstruction surgery. I, myself suffered a detrimental injury to my knee, I was looking for the best quality brace in which I could rely on while slowing going back into sports, specifically soccer. The brace begins halfway up my shin and ends near the middle of my quad. In the brace I feel confident going into slide tackles and simple things such as sprinting and pivoting/cutting, even after nearly a year of rehabbing my knee post reconstruction surgery. The brace, although said to have been measured just for me leg, seems too big at times and never generally stays in one place. Running in the brace feels unnatural and appears to weigh me down. I don’t receive full range of motion in the brace and it appears a bit bulky at time. Although I have discovered things I’m not so thrilled about with the brace, I’m very thankful for it. With the guarantee that you will not re-injure the ACL, I feel beyond secure and safe. Definitely recommend it to any young athlete, or any athlete in fact, who is interested in playing at a high level of play after suffering from a serious knee injury. - Shelbi Kelly
If it wasn't for my Defiance knee brace I wouldn't be able to play a lot of the sports I love. At the age of 47 I am back playing softball, volleyball and other activities that used to worry me with my knee stability. I don't know why anyone wouldn't take advantage of the stabilization advantage of these DonJoy knee braces. I'd love to know if my old WC claim would support me getting an upgrade for the new Defiance III, but even so I might look into it anyway. - Sweetwater
I bought this knee brace a little over 2 years ago and i had severe knee pain as a high school football player. I bought this brace and wore it for about 8 months and NOW i don't even have to wear it anymore! It's as almost as if the brace fixed my knee! INCREDIBLE! - Blake
It fit like a glove and never bothered me to wear it at all. Felt comfortable right away. Had meniscus surgery and didn't think I'd be able to run again, but this brace made it possible. - Smooch
I ve had two total knee rebuilds (acl). first time took out my knee playing football in highschool. second time playing softball at 42. ihad to have my knee rebuilt. Since high school ive had five braces. I thought i was done for good doing sports. I finally spent the money bought a donjoy. Dont spend the money on two or three cheap ones. I promise you you will not be disapointed. At 45 im playong softball, coaching youth sports, hiking etc. this brace has truely given me back what i had thought i had lost.....thank you Donjoy!! you wont be dissapointed!! PLAY ON! - wapiti5150
Simply a great product. - Falcon1

    • I am a Police Officer and was injured in the line of duty. I completely tore my ACL, both Meniscus were torn, and I have a lot of kneecap instability along with Stage 1 Arthritis. I had surgery Jan 2015 to repair the ACL and meniscus, and am still going through physical therapy. However, the brace that my Doctor ordered hurts my kneecap, and I am going to request another brace. I am leaning towards the Defiance because I not only want the best, but I also don't want to re-injure everything when I am able to return to duty. Is this the best brace for my injuries?
    • Mike
Yes the Defiance is the best brace for your situation. You can get a tru-Pull attachement installed on the brace to help with patellar instability if you want as well. The Defiance is our strongest brace so would hold during the work you do.
  • From lee at 3/24/2015 8:28 PM
    • i went Acl surgery in november of last year and went with the hamstring gaft( tore during contact). Im going to be playing football for college next year and im really confused on whether a custom fit is the best fit since my thigh is gaining its muscle back and wondering would it fit as time will go on? As a linemen should i go with more protection with the off the shelf brace?
    • Lee
You definatly want to go with the Custom Defiance. The Defiance is our best ACL brace, and is strong enough for a lineman. When you get a custom Defiance, from the time the brace is ordered up until 4 months you can get one free re-make. So if your girth changes within that 4 months we will re-make the brace at no cost. After 4 months it is a $300 charge. If you were to order an off-the shelf brace and it no longer fit after building muscle, you would have to buy a new brace. Getting the Defiance will save money in the long run.
  • From Bryan at 3/18/2015 12:06 PM
    • I recently tore my ACL and was looking into a knee brace to support it before I get surgery. Would the defiance III be a brace I would wear pre/post surgery? And would it allow me to play soccer while wearing it?
    • Bryan
The Defiance can be worn before surgery and after. You will just need to make sure that you are measured when you knee is not swollen or atrophied, be cause there is only one free re-make within four months. Usually if the brace is fit before surgery and you have no swelling then by the time you are ready to wear the brace after surgery is will still fit. There is no guarentee that you can play soccer even with the brace before surgery. The brace will protect the knee but cannot make up for the strength in your knee and leg muscles that is lost after injury.
  • From Paige at 2/21/2015 10:07 AM
    • I had surgery on my right knee and would like to return to playing soccer, softball, and basketball. However in soccer it is my dominant kicking leg and i am a strong kicker. Which kind/type of brace would be the best for these sports considering?
    • Paige
The Defiance is our best knee brace for someone who needs to return to sports activity. The brace is made specifically for your knee only and has our foucepoint technology to help protect against re-injury. The Defiance can be ordered through your local Don Joy sales rep found here:
  • From Bobbett at 1/13/2015 8:11 PM
    • I ruptured my ACL about 7 yrs ago. Didn't have reconstructive surgery, but did do 3 mos. of rehab. With a Rx through my ortho, I got the custome measured Defiance. Don't know if it's the Defiance III or the one with the FourcePoint Hinge, but I've been wearing it all these years. A few months ago, while the brace was in place, my meniscus moved and tore. I have surgery later this week to fix the meniscus. May get ACL reconstruction later this year if insurance will cover it. After looking at the videos on your site, I don't believe this brace was fitted right to my knee. The round pads don't even touch my knee nor sit on them like in the videos. Also, it's very hard to keep the brace from sliding down my leg, out of place, unless I tighten the strap below my knee so tightly that I feel like my circulation is being cut off. The DonJoy rep who measured my leg years ago did it manually. Is it still done that way or are digital cameras that create 3-D images now used? What do I do about the fact that this brace wasn't made correctly AND I was re-injured while wearing it? I have VERY limited resources which is why my ACL was never repaired 7 years ago. Thank you.
    • Bobbett
The Custom Defiance can be re-made if it does not fit you correctly, however it is a $300 charge fot the re-make unless your brace was made within the last 4 months. You will need to contact the Don Joy Sales Rep in your area to get this measurment and re-make. Our knee braces do not replace the ligament that has been torn in your leg but will offer more support than if you are not wearing a brace. If your ACL is reconstructed, and you wear one of our braces the brace will help to prevent re-tear of the ACL and has been clinically proven to do this up to 50% more than someone who does not wear a brace. We do offer a knee guarentee to someone who re-tears their ACL while wearing our brace, if it is within one year of their surgery and it was torn wearing one of our braces. We do not however have a guarentee for a meniscus tear and since you have no ACL in your knee most likley that is the cause of your knee not being as stable as it could be therfore could be a cause of your injury.
  • From Alan at 12/9/2014 7:24 AM
    • I have a knee brace that I purchased in 1996. How do I obtain replacement pads for it?
    • Alan
If it is a Custom brace there is a small sticker on the inside of the fram right below the outside condyle pad. The sticker has the brace serial number on it. You will need this number and can order replacement softgoods by calling 800-336-6569, option 1, option 1, and option 1 for Defiance orders. If you do not have a Defiance you can find your brace on our website and get replacement parts there.
  • From Javier at 12/1/2014 10:41 PM
    • My son's MRI has detected a complete tear of his ACL and a TINY tear in his meniscus. There is no other damage to his knee. We are weighing options but are looking at the possibility of wresting and/or baseball for this his senior year. Any recommendations on knee braces. If any metal is showing it would have to be padded over.
    • Javier
If your son is not haveing surgery then he wold have to wear one of our rigid knee braces to have any chance to play sports. Either the Don Joy Full Force Ligament Knee Brace This brace is patient ready and can be ordered off this website. The Custom Defiance is a custom brace that would have to ordered though a local Don Joy sales rep. To find the rep in your area follow this link:

    • I recently tore my ache and have had surgery and was wondering which brace would be best for a catcher that also plays middle infield and outfield? Thanks!
    • Keith
The Defiance is our custom brace and can be worn for any sport. If you are looking for a patient ready brace the Don Joy Full Force Knee brace is another good choice. it is light weight and low profile.
  • From Aspen at 10/24/2014 7:11 PM
    • Hi there,

I tore my ACL and MCL over the summer and was wondering if the Defiance III brace would work for ice hockey and pole vaulting? Im also only 5'2 so I was wondering whether a Short thigh or a Standard thigh length would be better?
    • Aspen
The Difiance II would work with both of those sports and yes you would want the short thigh and shot calf on the frame.
  • From Chris at 9/9/2014 6:34 AM
    • I am 5-6 but kind of have short legs. Is there any disadvantage of going with a Short Thigh and not the Standard thigh with a swoop? I prefer a smaller brace if possible, but will it protect me just as much. The standard one goes pretty far up my thigh.. They both feel ok, trying to make a decision. I play hockey and lacrosse and snowboard.
    • Chris
The short thigh will not change the way the brace works at all. If you feel a shorter brace works for you that is ok
  • From Amir at 8/19/2014 6:50 AM
    • I have a torn ACL and possible MCL, I do not want to the surgery and what to just do therapy and leg workout for now. would this brace help me play sports like soccer and basketball? or this is just a brace that is made for people who have done the sugary? if so is there a brace that I can order for the situation that I am in? Thanks
    • Amir
Yes the Defiance is the best brace for someone who has torn their ACL and wants to try to return to physical activities. The brace is custom made for your leg only and you would want to get our fourcepoint hinge. If you are interested in the Defiance you can order by contacting your local DJO Sales rep here:
  • From Kim at 7/27/2014 10:10 PM
    • I tore my MCL back in 2008 had surgery and now 6 yrs later I need surgery again while I am saving up to have another surgery I want to wear a good knee brace. Would this knee brace be ideal also can you use it for yoga and running 5K's?
    • Kim
The DonJoy Defiance will provide support for the MCL and can be worn while running but I am not sure it will work out with some of your poses with yoga, such as childs pose. Overall I think it should work
  • From Amy at 7/3/2014 11:33 PM
    • I have been wearing the Defiance OA for 10 months now and it's creaking loudly as a walk. Do you have any suggestions? Also, I've lost 70 pounds since I was first fitted and I'm concerned my brace isn't fitting the way it should, am I going to have to buy a whole new brace or can I get adjustments made somehow?
    • Amy
We do offer a re-make of your brace for $300, if it does not fit anymore because of the wieght loss. Just get re-meausred byt your local DJO rep and then you can order the re-make with a credit card to customer care. If you still have sqeaking after the re-make try some teflon spray in the hinge. You can get teflon spray at a hardware store
  • From Dave Griffin at 6/19/2014 6:18 PM
    • I want to register my Definance brace for the warranty but cannot find a number on the brace. Can you tell me where it is? I received the brace through my orthopedic doctor and do not have a separate receipt, just his receipt for services which included the cost of the brace. Thanks
    • Thank you for your question. You can find the number on the inside fame of your brace near the 4/5 strap. The number will start with a date 2014- - - - - - -R00. If you are still unable to find the number, please feel free to call us, we can search your brace by name to locate the number.
  • From Justin at 6/9/2014 6:50 PM
    • I am an offensive tackle who has Osgood Schlatter. Will this brace reduce the pain and prevent further injury?
    • Justin thank you for your question. For Osgood Schlatter you would find the most comfort with a buttress around the lower portion of your knee. A brace such as the DonJoy Performer Patella Knee support would be a good option. Other options for you include the Reaction WEB knee brace or the DonJoy Cross Strap.
  • From Alexandra Fox at 5/27/2014 12:26 PM
    • What is the best brace for a women's soccer player when is returning from Acl surgery
    • Thank you for your question. The best brace for a female soccer player returning to play from an ACL injury would be one of 2 braces. The Defaince, or the FullFource/FemaleFource. Both come with a short calf option (Great for shin guard accommodation) and the FourcePoint hinge, which gives extra protection to the ACL.

The protection level is the same. The difference is the Defiance line is custom fit, and has a life time warranty on the frame and hinges. Also, The Defiance line is a carbon fiber material. The FullFource/FemalFource is aircraft grade aluminum and has a 1 year warranty on the frame and hinges.
  • From Jimmy at 5/26/2014 12:09 PM
    • My patella ligament dislocates. This brace looks great, but is there something that would be able to secure my patella?
    • Thank you for your question. The Defiance III brace can have a tru-pull attachment add on to allow for patellar stability.
  • From Grigor at 5/23/2014 11:17 AM
    • Good evening folks! I have a basic question for this type of knee protection.
I broke my cruciate / crossed knee ligament a while ago and currently im on a rehab period to regain muscle power and volume.
Fact is that I DO NOT want to get surgery so my question is.. Do you reccomend using these knee braces in that case? even without surgery?

P.S : I play american football in Switzerland , EU , as an offsensive lineman

P.S.S : Sorry if my english is bad! :)
    • Thank you for your question (and your English is just fine!). This brace, and any of the rigid ligament knee braces, would be appropriate for an ACL deficient knee. It would be recommended to get a brace that has a FourcePoint hinge to help prevent further injury to the knee.
  • From Victor at 5/20/2014 3:27 PM
    • I had a skydiving accident and broke my femur and my pcl about 2 month ago. The femur fracture is healing well, i wanna know if defiance III is would help me? on regular basis I just run and go to the gym. and for skydiving i just need to run fast when i get to the grown.

    • Victor
The Defiance would help you by protecting your knee from further injury during your activities.

    • Can it be used to straighten the knee after Acl reconstruction ?
    • Thank you for your question. You may be looking for a post op brace. A brace like the DonJoy TROM Advanced Knee Brace will allow for range of motion settings to help during the recovery of an ACL injury. The Defiance III is a functional knee brace that can be worn after ACL repairs, however, is used for daily living/Activities. If you have any additional questions please don’t hesitate to contact us.

    • I have a donjoy defiance III womens brace from 6 years ago, and I have recently retore my acl for the 3rd time. I was wondering about how much it would cost to get it resized considering my musculature in my legs is significantly greater than when I had the brace made.

Re-makes are $300 you should contact your local DJO Sales Rep for re-measure. You can find your local rep here:

    • I had a complete knee separation jan 2014. I completely tore my acl and pcl and had surgery on feb 14 2014 to replace it. The doctors ordered me a metal contraption that gives me black and blue marks all over my legs and the metal is u comfortable and the unit slides. And my knee still feels like it moves. I work with horses and always in and around water. I would love a true custom fit brace that will protect mt acl and pcl and give me support I can actually feel as I try to heal. What do you suggest. Secondly I live in the U.S. virgin islands anf wo der how I can be measured. Please help dont wanna go under the knife again due to inferior brace!

    • Hello
I have a partially torn acl and this will be the third time i will be getting surgery. I'm currently in the market for a light weight small acl brace that will allow me to play soccer on a semi pro level. Is there anything that you would recommend? Also can you tell me how these braces compare to the townsend premiere acl braces?
    • Thank you for your question. The Full Fource or the Defiance III would be appropriate choices for you. Both come in a short option which is preferred by soccer players as it allows for shin guards to be worn without interference.
The defiance III is the custom brace, carbon fiber 22 oz and lifetime warranty on the frame and hinges.
The full fource is an Air-Craft Grade Aluminum, it is 20 oz and has a 1 year warranty on the frame and hinges.
If you have any additional questions please don’t hesitate to call us.

    • i tore my acl and i want to play until i'm able to pay the surgery. Would a knee brace help? I need something for soccer
    • Thank you for your question. The Defiance and the FullFource are braces used for soccer player who have ACL deficiency. You would want to go with ACL strapping and Short calf (for shin guard clearance). Both braces can be worn Post surgery as well and offer the same protection. The Defiance has a life time warrant y and is made of carbon fiber, where as the FullFource has a 1 year warranty and is an aircraft grade aluminum. Please feel free to call us with any additional questions.

    • I would like to ask you . Can you swim in swiming pool or in sea with this knee brace DonJoy ?
    • Yes you can swim in the ocean with this brace, you need to rinse the hinges with regular water afterwards to get any sand out of the hinges.
  • From Philip at 3/25/2014 2:04 PM
    • Would this be a good choice for tennis or would the Full Force be a better option for non contact sports?
    • Both braces would work for playing tennis. The differences are that the Custom is made of a carbon composite has a lifetime warranty on the hinges and frame and is made specifically for your leg for the best fit. The full force is made of aluminum has a one year warranty on the frame and hinges and is patient ready so you only need three measurements and look for you size in a sizing chart

    • I have a Donjoy Defiance III knee brace which was obtained following an ACL tear which is not reconstructed. I have not used the brace yet but plan to do so on a forthcoming ski trip in Utah in April. I wonder if you have or could point me to a set of graphic instructions for putting on the brace so as to maximize fit, comfort and effectivity. None was supplied with the brace.
    • A PDF will be mailed to you.
  • From Patrick at 3/16/2014 5:17 PM
    • My primary issue is missing meniscus cartilage on the right side of my right knee (due to damage after an ACL tear). Now when I run too much, I start to get pains in that area. Would this knee brace reduce the impact on my knee overall, or is it just designed as relief for the ACL?

    • The Defiance can be made with an OA adjustable hinge. This hinge would be on the lateral side in your case and can unload that side where you had your meniscus tear. So the brace will protect your ACL and unload the side of your knee where you have your pain.
  • From Angelo at 2/17/2014 7:29 AM
    • I have had an ACL reconstruction surgery after It was fully torn, and I seem to have re-injured the same knee a year later with a minor tear.

I practice Parkour and variations of Gymnastics, that typically involve myself landing prominently and only on my injured knee (Hard and forceful landings).

I do not want to sacrifice speed/power/flexibility or anything that hinders my movement as much as possible, but I still want full protection for my torn ACL.

So, my question is, which Knee brace should I order? A Donjoy Defiance or a Donjoy Fullforce?
    • Thank you for your question. The 2 major differences between the FullFource and the Defiance line are going to be 1. The materials and 2. The warranties. The FullFours is made of aircraft grade aluminum and the Defiance is a carbon fiber. The warrenty on the FullFource frame and hinges is 1 year and the Defiance has a lifetime warrant on the frame and hinges. Both braces will be light weight weighing about 22 ounces, allow full range of motion and protection to the ACL. The Defiance allows for more variation in color and styles as well as a custom fit.

I'm thinking about the Defiance III Brace (what do you think about this?), but I'm concern about the taken measurement since I'm out of USA, but I, could get someone to bring it to me if you teach me how to measure and let me buy it online. Or, could you tell how can we manage it?.

    • I have a partially torn ACLU, which my doctor cleaned up, but said he didn't need to replace as he could not make it fail during surgery. However, I did have a lateral meniscus transplant, ACI and distal femur osteotomy in the same knee last month. My doctor said I may want to go with the Defiance OA in order to keep the lateral side "jacked open" during sports. I don't see the defiance OA on this site though and wondering how to order. Thanks. Also, do you agree this is the best brace?

    • Eric,
This will be an excellent brace for you ACL and meniscus problems. You would order the DonJoy Defaince brace. When the rep contacts you, you would let them know it is going to be an OA brace. Thank you for your question. Please don’t hesitate to call if you have any further questions.

    • Mandie
Thank you for contacting DJO. The DonJoy Defiance III Custom Knee Brace is the best knee brace for you to wear after a ACL recontruction to protect the knee. It is custom made for your leg only and it has the combined technology of our 4 Points of Leverage Strapping and the fourcepoint hinge which both have been clinically proven to reduce ACL tears up to 50%. If you are interested in getting this brace you can get in contact with your local DJO rep, either through your doctors office of you can contact product support at (888) 405-3251 and we would be happy to get that information for you.

    • How does the defiance for OA, compare to the other custom OA braces. I am a police officer, and need a reliable brace, that can with stand the riggers of my job.
    • Adam
The Defiance OA brace is our best OA brace. It is measured specifically for your leg only to maximize the best fit. It also can accommodate up to 10 degrees of correction where our off the shelf braces will only accommodate 3-7 degrees. The frame is made of a strong carbon composite that is lightweight and durable. This is the same frame that we use for pro football players braces.

    • I am a volleyball player and have a torn ACL and cartilage damage. I am a senior so I decided to play my last season in high school with a bad knee. My doctor said that id I want to play; my cartilage might get too much damaged that they wont be able to fix it. So I wonder if this knee brace will help me preventing that from happening and also help my knee get stronger. Do I have to wear it while walking too or just when I run, practice, and compete? Thank you
    • Dat,
The defiance brace is designed primarily for ligament instabilities. This would be a great brace for you ACL injury. If the cartilage damage is on one side more than the other, you may want to look at a brace from the DonJoy OA line. The OA braces are designed for Osteoarthritis and meniscus injuries and can be combines with ligament strapping for the ACL. You would be advised to speak with your doctor regarding the best option for you. Thank you for your question.

    • Chris,
The Defiance III would be an excellent choice for your son. This brace comes standard with the swooping thigh and swiveling tabs, which are great for athletes. It would be recommended that you also go with the metal power caps and reinforced fiber frame since your son plays a contact sport. If you would like to have your son measured, you can give us a call to get the name and number for your local rep. Thank you for your question.

Frist, Is it brace good for me when i come back i train in high condition?
Second, i live in Viet Nam and my uncle live in US so how can i get exactly size ?
    • Thank you for contacting product support. The Defiance III custom knee brace is our best brace for return to high activity after ACL reconstruction. If you wanted to get this brace you would need to be measured by either a medical professional or a DJO representative. We do have other options that would only require a few measurement that you could do on your own and your Uncle could order the brace for you in the US. Take a look at the Armor or the Full Force Both of these braces are used for contact sports and have the same Four-Points of Leverage and FourcePoint hinge technology that reduce re-injury of the ACL by 50%, that the Defiance III does. You would only need to measure 6 inches above your kneecap, 6 inches below the mid knee and at the knee joint and find the size that coresponds to those measurements. If you have any other questions please do not hesitate to contact us.

    • Hey, I am looking for a brace for snowboarding. I tore my ACL and got surgery on it and would like a brace to feel more comfortable. I am looking at 3 different braces from you guys and wondering which would be the best. The Defiance III, the Armor ski version or full force? I am sure the Defiance is the better one but do i need a custom brace over an off the shelf and is it worth the 300 bucks more or so? If i cant afford the custom brace which of the two would be better for snowboarding? The Armor or Full Force? Thanks
    • Race,
Both the Armor and the Fullforce (as well as our defiance III) come with ForcePoint hinge which I would recommend you get. It's an added ACL protection option. The armor is the strongest brace we make at .125" thick. I would first consider that brace over the FullForce for you. We recommend this brace for contact sports (and snowboarding can be as much a contact sport as some other traditional sports). Both the FullForce and the Armor come in a short option; depending on how tall you are and how high your boots come up you may think about going short. a standard brace will be 18" in length and the short will be 17" bringing it up on the calf an inch higher.
If you have any further questions please feel free to email or call us. Thanks.

    • The custom brace is made to your legs measurements, it would depend on how much weight you would lose throughout the entire leg.

      Dear BetterBraces,

My name is Yacine and I'm a football player in Sweden. I play as an offensive lineman and I'm currently looking for two braces, one for each leg.

I've torn my PCL ligament in my right knee and I'm suffering from overloading in my left knee. Therefore, I'm currently looking for two knee braces. One brace that will help my right knee with the PCL rapture and one that will help my left knee from getting overloaded and risking to tear something off.

I've been looking around on your website, which is pretty awesome, and I'm having a hard time deciding what's the best for me. Since calling you calls a lot, I've decided to ask you through the internet instead. So, which brace would fit me the best? I've heard a lot of good things about this one, however, I still wanna know what you think.

Thank you in advance, can't wait too hear from you!
      Best Regards,
      Yacine Laghmari
    • The Defiance III would fit you the best it is custom made to your leg's specifications, these are the same braces NFL Lineman wear to protect their knees.

    • Hi There,

6 weeks ago I had an operation to reconstruct and reattach pretty much my entire PosteroLateral Corner of my knee as well as my ACL. The Surgery was successful. Doctor has however said that it will be dificult for me to Play Soccer/Football again due to the Pivoting? (I know this would only be in over a years time). He said mainly due to the fact that the PosteroLateral Corner was very badly damaged. Does the Donjoy Defiance III Custom Knee Brace protect the PosteroLateral Corner of the knee and will it allow me to play my sports again? Or is there a better knee brace for this injury?

Thanks, would really appreciate a repsonse.
    • Hello Alessio,

The Defiance Knee Brace is a Custom ACL Brace. We also have Off the Shelf ACL Braces, the Armor, and Full-Fource, all feature the FourcePoint hinge which prevent the knee to go into hyperextension.

Please see the website for more information.

      Thanks for contacting Donjoy.

    • I'm looking for a good ACL brace (for my partially torn reconstructed ACL) that would last playing beach volleyball without the sand ruining the hinges. This one looks like it has a slightly different hinge than my current Dongjoy Knee Brace (Donjoy Armour) - will this brace, or another Donjoy brace work well in the sand without getting ruined? Another one I checked out was the Defiance III Female Fource.
    • Hello Amber,

Anyone of our braces can be used for beach volleyball. I recommend rinsing the brace out with water after use, to make sure all sand is removed from the hinge. I recommend the Armor, due to the diving/hitting the ground, this brace frame is more rigid and will hold up.

      Thanks for Contacting Donjoy.

My plan is to redo my surgery few years from now. i have few questions:

firstly, does the brace help for lifting weights, like hypertrophy training? squatting, lunges, etc. And if so, as i know legs may grow so fast, so the brace will be out of size so fast... any plan i can make?

secondly, does it help to not get my meniscus get damaged? Also i heard with delaying surgery, there is a great chance to get arthritis. does the brace help it to be prevented?

Thirdly, after doing the surgery, can i use DonJoy Armor or Defiance for post-rehab stage( after surgery stage)

and finally, i am living in Malaysia, is there any distributes in Malaysia? how to apply for costume or off shelf braces?

We do have a DJO Representative in Malaysia. Here you can find their information:

The Armor Thigh Cuff and Calf Cuff are malleable, you can bend the bar out if needed, as your muscles hypertrophy. The custom can't be changed once it's made.

    • Hello, I had my ACL totally torn a few months ago and I won't be able to make a surgery till I finish my school. Is there any brace that can help me to play soccer without injuring my other ligaments?
    • Hello, Pedro -

Unfortunately, even with wearing a brace, there is no 100% guarantee that other ligaments cannot be damages with activities such as soccer. The ACL does carry a majority of the load, so with an ACL tear, the other structures in the knee are compromised and more load will be put upon these structures as well.

We do recommend the DonJoy Defiance for your needs, however we do stress that it does not mean that other structures will not be injured.

    • Will the straps still grab as tight after being in and out of the lake all summer long?
    • Hello, Jake -

The straps should not be affected as the grip is made of hook velcro. However, if a brace is worn in water (pool, lake, ocean, etc), we recommend that after use, it be rinsed under tap water to remove any debris, salt, chlorine so as not to compromise the integrity of the straps and brace.

    • Hello, Mike -

We recommend that your son speak to his athletic trainer or doctor, or whoever fitted him for the brace. Because we do not know the diagnosis of his knee, we do not know what type of support he needs as we have many braces to choose from that provide different types of support for diagnoses.

    • I tore my meniscus during pre season football and there was a server risk of my ACL being torn. Fortunately, it wasn't and I had a bucket handle torn meniscus. Would this brace help while playing football for protecting the knee?
    • Hello, Francis -

The DonJoy Defiance III is a custom brace, therefore a rep or healthcare professional (doctor, physical therapist) would have to fit you for the item. As far as the functionof this brace, yes, it is recommended for prophylactic knee ligament support, the ACL in particular. If you prefer to use a standard (non-custom) knee brace that protects and supports the knee ligaments, we recommend either of the following: the Legend, 4titude, Armor, or Full Force.

Thanks and have a great day!

    • Hi,
I've used both the CTi and DJ Full Force knee brace. I like the way the DJ brace upper attachement grabs the top of the tibia and I find that it doesn't slide down as much as the CTI. However during kitesurfing I want a brace that is very stiff laterally and I find the stiffness of the CTI to be superior to the Full Force though. How would the lateral support of the Defiance compare to a CTI and a Full Force brace?

And would a short calf be less prone to migration as it would have both straps above the bulk of the calf muscle? How does the support and stiffness vary with the calf length option?
    • Hi Chris,

The Defiance is made of carbon fiber and it the stiffest brace we have. We have an additional order option to reinforce the brace with another layer of carbon fiber if you want. The reinforced frame is an option we market to our collegiant and professional football players as well as otehr high contact or extreme sports athletes. The Defiance also has our 4-points-of-leverage system, which helps with fit and suspention. But, most importantly it help prevents anterior tibial translation, which can injure the ACL. Depending on you calf shape and size, the short calf may be helpful to prevent migration. The shorter calf length will not comprmise the stiffness of the brace.

Another option for an off the shelf brace is our Armor. It is made of aircraft grade aluminum and is our strongest off the shelf brace.

If you have additional questions, please call, 1-800-553-6019

      Have a great day.

I live in Dubai, UAE and I have had 2 ACL Surgeries so far. Also, I have recently torn and reconstructed my MCL. Some of the meniscus has also been removed.

I understand that for the Defiance III, there are measurements taken. Since I live abroad, who will take the measurements?

    • It's ok to take in the water. Just make sure you rinse the hinges and softgoods out with fresh water, let it dry, and re-lubricate with a teflon dry lubricant. Usually a bicycle chain lubricant will work.

    • I have just had my 4th acl surgery. I am 16 years old and love sports and never see myself quiting. I have had 3 surgeries on my left knee including the one I had 6 weeks ago. My other knee braces don't help me because my left knee is very loose and my tibia slides to the inside very easily and a lot. Can your knee braces help to make that stop? The other surgery I had on my left knee made my knee do the same thing that I just explained and I did just as I was told in physical theapy and by my doctor who is ranked in the top 10 surgens in Ohio. If the donjoy knee brace can't help me then there is no other brace that can help me. I know this because I have tried on every brace imaginable. My sporting career is on the line. Can the donjoy knee brace stop the movement of my tibia?
    • The best Donjoy Knee Brace for your condition is the Custom Defiance ACL Brace with Fourcepoint Hinges. The frame design combined with the only hinge clinically proven to protect the ACL would be your best choice. In saying that, it is part of the equation. The surgery, therapy, your compliance in applying the brace properly and wearing it at all times is important. It sounds like you've had a long history of injuries so this is something you should discuss with your surgeon and family. However, to answer your question, this would be your best choice.

    • I am a Wide Receiver and Outfielder who has had 2 acl reconstructions on my right knee, I was curious as to what brace you think would be best for me? I am looking for a light weight brace that will give me maximum stability and protection of my acl, while not sacrificing any speed. I guess I have narrowed it down to either the Full Force or the Custom Defiance (unless you recommend something else), but I'm curious as to how much the Defiance weighs. Also another concern is I am 7 months post op, so I am just now starting to lift heavy in my legs again, because of this I'm concerned about outgrowing the brace. Would gains from weight lifting be enough to cause a need for a change in size in the braces that are not custom fitted, based on the intervals of measurement and sizing? With all this being said please let me know what you recommend. Lastly, I was wondering if there is any location near Charlotte, NC that I could actually go and try these on and see for myself. Please let me know! Thanks,

    • Hello Zach,

The Defiance weighs approx 20 ounces, while the Full Force weighs 22 ounces.

The Defiance can be remade to new measurements within 4 months of the brace's manufacture date, after that it can be remade at a lower price.

At this time we are a retail website only, with no physical retail location.
