Ankle Braces for Sports

I was keeping time for an ultimate frisbee tournament this weekend and I was surprised at the poor quality ankle supports and make-shift taping people were using. Like any sport with lots of running and quick turns, ultimate frisbee players put a lot of strain on the ankles. A rolled ankle or slip in the mud can lead to ankle sprains and tenderness… which no athlete wants.

I found myself suggesting that these players check out some of the ankle braces available on BetterBraces.com. Here are some of the bestselling ankle braces:

DonJoy Velocity Ankle Brace – One of the best ankle braces on the market – provides maximum support and like-custom comfort.

Aircast Airsport Ankle Brace – Ideal for ankle protection during all types of physical activity.

Aircast A60 Ankle Brace (also available in white) – Protects your ankles at their weakest point to help prevent ankle rollovers and ankle sprains.

DonJoy Stabilizing Ankle Brace – A more consistent and effective alternative to ankle taping.

One of the most important things I suggest to people is to make sure you protect your joints during physical activity. I’ve personally witnessed so many unexpected injuries that might have been prevented with a bit of protection.

P.S. Always check with your doctor when treating injuries so they can determine the best solution for your situation.

Recently my friend told me she was in the market for an ankle brace. Since she knows I often write for BetterBraces.com, she looked there first. Here were some things she shared with me that she really liked about shopping on this site:

  • Free Shipping – Currently there’s free shipping on all orders!
  • Price Match Guarantee – She’s a big deals shopper, and this gave her peace of mind that she’d get the lowest possible price on the ankle brace she wanted.
  • 90-Day Guarantee – My friend is also a big online shopper. Having a return guarantee gave her confidence to know that she could return the brace if it didn’t fit.
  • Brace Coaches – This was probably the best thing for her… she didn’t know exactly which ankle brace she wanted or needed. The customer care team was able to speak with her and help her pick the right ankle brace for her situation.

BetterBraces.com carries the leading brands for braces and supports and has great service. If you’re looking to buy, check it out! They were able to help my friend get the perfect ankle brace for when she goes hiking and cycling.

Aircast Airsport Ankle Brace

It’s back to school season which means students are headed back to sport. Lots of fall sports involve the ankle – football, soccer, volleyball, cross country and cheerleading. Some schools also have basketball, golf and tennis during the fall season. Like most physical activities, each of these runs the risk of an ankle injury.

Many sports therapists recommend wearing ankle braces to help prevent ankle injuries during sports. A great ankle brace for this is the Aircast Airsport Ankle Brace. It’s ideal for multiple types of sports, perfect for the athlete that continues on to other activities after the fall season. The Aircast Airsport comes with unique aircell technology that cushions and stabilizes the areas around the ankle. This provides compression that helps prevent ankle sprains and provides extra support for people who have had ankle sprains in the past. It also has a semi-rigid outer casing which protects the ankle from outside contact and from moving the wrong way.

Another great feature of the Aircast Airsport is that it’s super easy to put on.  You just step in and go! It fits comfortably in athletic shoes and doesn’t  inhibit movement. The Airsport is also made with a coated fabric, so it stands up to long hours of use.

Customer Aircast Airsport Review:  “I’ve always been prone to sprains; then I needed multiple surgeries on my ankle. I started playing volleyball again and needed a serious brace, so I bought this. I didn’t sprain my ankle a single time the entire year. My old Active Ankles would always give me blisters the few times I wore them, but this brace never did. Well worth the price.”

Soccer Ankle Injuries

Soccer ankle injuries such as ankle sprains and ankle strains are very common. All it takes is stepping on uneven ground or on another player’s foot, and you can roll your ankle.  Sometimes soccer athletes go up for a header and land precariously on their feet, leading to further ankle injuries.

Wearing soccer ankle braces can help prevent injuries on the field. Combined with regular training, ankle braces can keep you healthy through the whole soccer season. Here are some of our top soccer ankle braces:

DonJoy Stabilizing Ankle Brace – Often heralded as the best soccer ankle brace, the DonJoy Stabilizing Ankle does exactly what its name says! It’s especially lightweight so it won’t inhibit movement.

Aircast A60 Ankle Brace – This brace comes with stabilizers at each side of the ankle, supporting the ankle at its weakest points. One of our bestsellers!

Aircast Airsport Ankle Brace – This brace is great for soccer and other sports as well. The Aircast Airsport is versatile, and supports your ankle and foot with unique cushioning aircells.

Skateboarding Ankle Injuries

Holly B. is an active professional in her late twenties who spends her free time playing recreational flag football and league basketball. She shares her experience with us as she explores the world of sports.

Growing up in Southern California, lots of my friends were avid skateboarders.  They would perform tricks off stairs and railings, and conquer the steepest hills in town.  Needless to say, my friends would often get hurt as well.

Sometimes their injuries went beyond your average adolescent scrapes and cuts.  My friend Jon was once doing a skateboarding trick known as an ollie.  It’s one of the simpler tricks, but he ended up landing on the side of his ankle.  This caused a crack down his lateral malleolus, also known as the ball of the ankle. He spent over a year in a medical walking boot (also known as a walking brace), which provided support to his ankle while it healed.  That skateboarding injury was no small matter.  Even now he experiences ankle instability and wears ankle braces for added stabilization when involving yourself in physical activity.

When participating in activities such as skateboarding, be sure to wear ankle protection and other protective gear such as knee pads, elbow pads and helmets.  You don’t want to be stuck in “recovery mode” for over a year like Jon!  If you’ve injured your ankles during skateboarding or other similar activities, check with your doctor to see if medical walking boots or ankle braces can be used to help with your rehabilitation.
