History of Aircast
Founded in the early 70's Aircast exists because of a lucky
break — that's if you can call getting a segmental tibial
fracture while skiing being lucky. After months in a plaster
cast Glenn Johnson was on the verge of a nonunion. With no
prior orthopedic training, Glenn recognized the problems,
studied the literature, and developed the first
off-the-shelf below-the-knee cast, an "aircast". With
aircells lining a rigid orthosis the device was comfortable
to walk in, while the aircells pulsated with each step and
milked out the edema. To the surprise of the surgeon, who
was convinced that a bone graft was necessary, Glenn's
delayed union healed. For years, Aircast's Pneumatic Walking
Braces were made at home and given away to interested
doctors and patients. The Aircast Walking Brace line has now
expanded to include the FoamWalker, SP-Walker, and the
PneumaticWalker Diabetic System.
Today, most people know Aircast because of the Air-Stirrup®
Ankle Brace, a semi-rigid orthosis lined with the patented
Duplex™ aircell system. An article published in Contemporary
Orthopaedics wrote, the Air-Stirrup "revolutionized the
management of ankle injuries."
Aircast devices have been used by almost one out of every
five families.

The Aircast Technology

Functional Management Most joint injuries heal better and faster if the injured joint can
be used, while being protected against further injury. This concept
is the basis of "functional management" and is the principal behind
the innovative designs of Aircast devices.
Functional management is the treatment of choice for improving
outcomes, enhancing patient quality of life, and reducing health
care costs. Aircast pioneered the functional management of
ankle sprains by developing the
Air-Stirrup® Ankle Brace — now the standard
of treatment. Building on this philosophy, the
Aircast PneumaticWalker™, FoamWalker™,
SP-Walker, and the
Leg Brace are
designed to provide functional management for injuries of the foot
and lower leg. Research confirms that the functional management of
injuries, using Aircast devices, produces superior results.
Graduated, Pneumatic Compression
The therapeutic benefits of graduated, pneumatic compression are the
foundation of the exclusive Aircast Duplex™ aircell design. This
patented design is constructed of two overlapping aircells that
massage the injured area, milking away edema and reducing swelling.
Because the Aircast Duplex™ aircell design is seamless, it provides
consistent, uninterrupted compression without space between
compartments where edema can collect. The Duplex aircell design is
the cornerstone of the Aircast Air-Stirrup, PneumaticWalker, and
FoamWalker.
Aircast also applied the science of compression to the treatment of
deep vein thrombosis (DVT) with the development of the VenaFlow®
system. It is designed to employ graduated, sequential compression
to move more blood faster and be more comfortable than any other
known device for the prevention of DVT.
Compression with Cryotherapy
Clinically proven effective to decrease pain and reduce swelling,
the innovative concept of combining compression and cryotherapy in
one device was established with the
Aircast Cryo/Cuff®.
